Today is the day, and it’s finally time to get the keys on moving day! Everything up until now, we’ve been working towards this special moment when you receive the keys to your new home. Here’s what happens the day you move in and what to watch out for.
We’ll have an official date and a specific time in your offer for the possession date (the day you get the keys). We’ll have negotiated this day and time into your offer. On your possession date, I’ll meet you at your new home to give you the keys. We’ll also walk through the property together to ensure everything is as it should be.
Sometimes the possession date may not have been your first choice, for example, midday on a work day. Rember, this was part of the negotiations, and you may have gone with the seller’s preferred date. If you don’t have the day off or it’s inconvenient, I’m happy to pick up your keys on your behalf. We can meet later, or I’ll deliver your keys to you at your office or home.
All in all, when it comes to getting the keys on moving day, we’ll need about 20 minutes together. In most cases, I’ll already have met the seller’s agent, and they’ll have done their move-out walk-through and already gone. Then, We’ll do your move-in walk-through. It’s a good idea to test all the appliances right away. If there’s an issue, we’ll have a better chance of asking the seller to take care of fixing things. We’ll also be looking around to ensure the seller didn’t forget anything. crawl spaces, garden sheds, and attics are common areas things are forgotten. Again uncovering items on the day you get the key gives us a better chance of the sellers returning for them.
